Safe & Organic Skin Care {Summer Sequoia Review}

“It is an excellent principle and a wise precaution not to apply substances to our skin that we would not take internally.”- Summer Sequoia

As you probably know by now I am all about eating healthy, clean, organic foods. Did you know that what you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN your body? Your skin is your largest organ and everything you put on it goes straight into your blood stream. This is why it is so very important to use chemical free skincare, make up, and cleansing products.

Over the past year I have done a lot of research on good and bad ingredients and what products/companies we can actually trust. I can’t wait to share all of my findings with you!

The top 10 most toxic ingredients found in beauty supplies today are:

  1. Parabens– mimics estrogen increasing risk for breast cancer
  2. Synthetic Colors (D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue 1)- derived from petroleum or coal tar and suspected to be a human carcinogen.
  3. ‘Fragrance’– known for causing allergies, dermatitis, respiratory problems, and even effects on the reproductive system.
  4. Phthalates– endocrine disruptors and known for increased risk of breast Β cancer and reproductive issues.
  5. Triclosan– endocrine disruptor, possibly making bacteria antibiotic resistant. Found in soaps and toothpastes.
  6. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)– found in 90% of all personal care products. Known to be a skin, lung, and eye irritant. Can combine with other chemicals to make nitrosamines, a carcinogen.
  7. Formaldehyde– allergic skin reactions, harmful to the immune system, and cancer causing.
  8. Toluene– can cause immune system toxicity, cause nausea, and irritate skin. Found in nail polishes also in paint thinners.
  9. Propylene glycol-Β can cause dermatitis and hives.
  10. Sunscreen Chemicals– endocrine disruptors that are easily absorbed into the body; benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate and ethoxycinnmate

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some of my favorite natural and organic skincare products with you. First up:

Summer Sequoia Tallow Skin Balm

Last year I bought a tallow candle from Summer Sequoia and LOVE it!! (More on that in another post since this one is about skin care πŸ˜‰ )

Megan at Summer Sequoia shared with me some of her skin balms and they are A-MAZ-ING!! These skin balms are handcrafted in Oakland, California and made out of grass-fed tallow, which has many health benefits.

What is tallow?

Grass-fed tallow is the fat surrounding the organs of a pasture raised animal. It is similar to coconut oil in that it can be used as a cooking oil or skin care product. It contains many health benefits, just as coconut oil does and it has a great fatty acid profile that will also keep it from going rancid quickly. Tallow is easily absorbed into the body, making it an amazing moisturizer and skin care product!

What is so good about tallow?

Tallow is full of anti-aging antioxidants and nutrients such as Vitamin A, D, E, and K. It also promotes skin regeneration and tightens integrity of skin cells.

Tallow also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which possess great anti-inflammatory effects and palmitoleic acid which contains antimicrobial characteristics.

Why should tallow be grass-fed?

Choosing 100% grass-fed tallow is important to avoid chemicals, contaminates, and pesticides. Which is exactly why Summer Sequoia uses grass-fed, local tallow from family farms.

You can find out more information about Summer Sequoia HERE and more about benefits of tallow HERE.

I have tried out two of their tallow balms so far- the Chef & Gardener’s Blend & the Feel Better Chest and Muscle Rub.

Chef & Gardener’s Balm: great for those that ‘cook’ or ‘garden’ or whatever you use your hands to do. The oils in this balm are great for dry, irritated, or chapped skin. Just an overall great balm for protecting against all kinds of elements.

*This would be a great balm to keep in your purse especially during the cold winter months for chapped skin and hands.

*Ingredients: local grass-fed beef tallow, certified organic California extra- virgin olive oil, and essential oils* of melaleuca, lavender, roman chamomile, rosemary, helichrysum, myrrh.

Feel Better Chest & Muscle Rub: great for those sore muscles, head aches, or congestion. I tried this on a sore neck/back from bad sleeping (I think I need a new pillow…) and it soon offered relief. It didn’t last forever, but just keep working this rub into those sore muscles and you’ll feel the difference.

I also wanted to try this one out since my husband has bad migraines. Thankfully, since I’ve gotten this balm he hasn’t had a bad migraine (he is learning his triggers and what to avoid), but I’m glad I have it on hand for next time.

*Ingredients: local grass-fed beef tallow, certified organic California extra-virgin olive oil, and essential oils* of clove, cypress, marjoram, eucalyptus, melaleuca, and grapefruit

I also tried out the tallow lip balm {cardamom and wild orange}Β and y’all, it is just as amazing!! It just glides right on, that’s how oily this is. It is another must-have for those cold winter days.

Ingredients are shown below. Can’t get any better than those!!
